Day on a Train

Today we left Croatia by train. it was an early train so it was a 5:30am morning. Matt wanted to make sure we had a nice comfy ride to enjoy the gorgeous landscapes of Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, and Germany.

The hotel packed us each a breakfast. Remind me to thank them for including choclate-chocolate-chip "muffins" filled with nutella.  I might also suggest a spoon for the plain yogurt and if they REALLY want to splurge, some honey or jam.
The view was every bit as incredible as we hoped. There were dramatic landscapes, cultivated gardens and farms, perfectly landscaped cottages and sweet window boxes.

We had a lovely setup. Matt, the girls and I were settled in one compartment with all the comforts, the boys were in another. At one point they were all in one compartment playing scum when some passengers boarded who had "reserved seats". We didn't realize that was even an option. So, the boys had to get dispersed and that was a big bummer.

Unfortunately that didn't even last. Because the train we were on was "late"(???) we had to get off on a stop in Slovenia and get on a local train to Salzburg. This included a 90 minute wait in a train station. Eli and Matt left to find an ATM because the one at the station didn't work. They came back an hour later right before the train left with Crepes covered in chocolate. They took these pictures.

Meanwhile we were getting a little ancy, dirty, and uncomfortable hanging around. I still don't really understand why we got ousted from our 1st class train but the seats just got worse and worse.

Still the views did not disappoint. Kids were pretty good for the most part. Sennia finished her math book during this time.

On the last train from Salzburg to Munich we caved and the girls sat together and watched a movie. It was an overly full train with people standing for 2 hrs. i was very thankful we had seats, especially the little girls.

We got out of the train station and had a 30 minute walk to our hotel. That wasn't my favorite. Germany is much more hustle and bustle with bikes rushing on paths intermingled with the side walk. We were hungry and tired. Sennia and Brigham seem to have colds so they're sniffly. We got to our hotel, dropped our stuff, used the WC and headed to a dinner joint we'd passed on our way in. It was delicious.
It was a healthy/expensive Burger joint. Lots of Vegetarian and Vegan options. Elise was THRILLED not to have to eat a beef burger. She liked the fake chicken burger. I loved my spinach and cheese burger. Full and exhausted, we got tucked in as soon as we got home from dinner. I wish a could say early but it's actually almost 10pm. Good night.
